on a more serious note

working as a nurse, i am around a lot of sick people and obviously taking care of them is part of my job. i see a lot of stuff that i would never want anyone to have to go through. you never really think that bad things can happen to you, close family members, etc. we haven't had a whole lot of medical problems in my family but it is definitely scary when things like that do happen.

my mom started having abdominal pain last week and by wednesday night, early thursday morning, she couldn't handle it anymore. my dad took her into the emergency room and they found a cyst on one of her ovaries. they said it was the size of an orange! ovaries are only the size of a walnut so you can imagine how much bigger the cyst is. now, cysts are pretty common in women and are usually pretty small and harmless and will resolve on their own. when it is to the size of an orange, it's not okay. since it was causing her so much pain, the doctor thought it had ruptured which can cause internal bleeding, infection, etc. and she would need to get it removed. well, this just so happened to be the weekend of my little brothers state basketball championship games in reno. my mom was not missing out on that. so she got some medication and they headed up to reno that evening.

my brother ended up taking state, this is their third year in a row with basketball! do you believe me now that alamo is pretty much the bomb at sports? haha. anyways, they got home late friday night. my mom was still having a ton of pain and her belly looked like she was six months pregnant. she went to see the obgyn yesterday and they found that the ovarian cyst had grown 2cm and was causing the ovary to torsion out of its normal location. this is what was causing all the pain. it hadn't ruptured yet, which was good, but it was growing, which was not good. it is also bumpy around the edges which could means it could possibly be cancerous. she is set to have surgery this friday where they will remove the cyst and also biopsy it to check and see if it is cancerous or not. we sure hope that it isn't because that is a whole other ballgame.

we know my mom will be alright through all of this. she definitely isn't pleased about finding out about this but we are glad that it was caught before it got worse. please keep her in your prayers!
